It’s a new year and most of us including myself like to start it with new years resolutions.
To be perfectly honest I had enough of doing this a while back and have decided to accept that I am who I am.
I am starting to realise that I can’t be the perfect human being who will start to exercise regularly, detox, get at least 8 hours sleep a day and so on…Every January, when I try and fail, it just makes me feel sad. I really don’t see how being so perfect for a month can help me, if I know I will then continue to be imperfect for another 11 months. What I believe is better for all of us is to try and find some sort of balance on a daily basis and all year round, not just in this 1 month. Be honest to yourself, it’s ok to be naughty from time to time, surely you’ll feel happier and get more smiley lines around your eyes, rather than frown lines on your forehead.
Another thing I am starting to realise is that I am ageing…,yes it is happening !! I’m nearly 40.
I can clearly see all my fine lines and wrinkles framing my eyes. I can’t complain about those ones though, as it’s clearly from so much laughing! The cleft between my eyebrows is getting deep, a fallout of frowning – hmm…less nice. I have Hyper pigmentation, a result from endless sunbathing on the beach as a teenager, right up until only 3 years ago, when I decided that it’s time to save my skin! I still get the odd pimple here and there due to my not so perfect diet or the monthly period. This did bother me until recently as society puts so much pressure on women to look youthful and beautiful 24/7 and to stop the ageing process. And sure, who doesn’t want to look a bit younger?
I’ve made an honest decision for myself to never go for the injections or the scalpel. To embrace age, learn to love my wrinkles and grow old gracefully.
Saying that I would love to share my vision on how to look and feel great as you get another year older and drum up youth-boosting confidence no matter how many birthday candles are on your cake.
Start using Moisturiser with sunscreen every morning on a daily basis and Retinoids at night time before going to bed in the winter time.
The Dermalogica Overnight Retinol Repair 0.5% or 1% is my favourite and it shows the quickest results. Vitamin A (Retinol) teaches your skin to act young again and stimulates the production of collagen. The earlier you start using them the better. I recommend at age 25 +. Your skin will thank you for it and will look so much younger.
I used to swim 4 times a week up until 3 years ago when I dislocated my knee from over doing it.
I got out of the exercise routine and now I’m finding it difficult to start again. It’s those first few efforts and moves you have to do, to get back into it and then you know that you’re back in the routine. Well hopefully one day…I do remember though that when I was exercising my main motivation was to release stress, feel good and keep my body in good shape. I felt amazing and my skin glowed. Anything that is good for your body is good for you skin too.
Whatever you love doing, whether it’s running, swimming, yoga, pilates…keep doing it.
When people raise the topic of Botox and Fillers, which is something I’ve been assured by many professionals and friends will erase the signs of ageing – I balk. I’m not against it at all and I’ve seen it do brilliant things, but I’m just a wimp and I am convinced that I will be the one it would go wrong for and who would end up with a sloping eyebrow, wonky cheeks or worse. I’m not bothered enough about those lines yet to take the plunge seriously. So I keep investigating other less invasive routes to getting smoother skin.
A treatment that makes a genuine difference without having to use the big guns of cosmetic procedure is the Dermalogica BioSurface Peel. After only 1 procedure your skin immediately looks brighter and fresher. The fine lines are visibly blurred.
I do recommend at least a course of 3, but if you go for 6 that’s even better.
The treatments have to be 2 weeks apart for best results.
If you are not a fan of Peels, a regular monthly 1 hour facial can do magic too, if you want to maintain those results.
I hope I’ll manage to inspire and encourage those of you who strive to stay forever young in a realistic and manageable way. Always remember though, to look at what’s most important, to be remembered for loving and being loved, of a life well lived.
That, to me, is what real beauty is.
