Creative Writing Retreat September 21st - 27th, 2027
The Art of Attention
A writing retreat in the Etruscan heartland
Most writing advice begins with words. This retreat begins with seeing.
The Art of Attention teaches you to notice what the hurried eye misses: the telling gesture, the detail that carries a whole character, the gap where the story really lives.
For a week you’ll live and write in a farmhouse in the Umbrian countryside, on the border with Tuscany, in land the Etruscans once called home. They left almost no literature, only images, tombs and faces carved in stone, and learning to read them is part of the work. Between craft sessions on voice, character and structure, you’ll venture out to the nearby hill towns and villages, to write among their streets and treasures. You’ll leave with pages written, and with a way of looking that stays with you long after.

The place
Siliano Alto is a two-hundred-year-old farmhouse set high on a hill within a wild estate on the Umbrian-Tuscan border. Cypresses, forest and farmland stretch out on every side, deer and wild boar move through the woods, and wolves and birdlife keep their own hours. Mornings begin with sunrise over the hills; evenings end with the sun setting across Tuscany. Above all, there is silence, the kind that makes room for writing. Meals are prepared by our chef from local produce and shared around one table. It is a place to slow down, to look properly, and to be looked after while you do.

The craft sessions
Each morning brings a workshop on a core element of the writer’s craft: finding your own writing process, research, narrative and story arcs, character, point of view and the unreliable narrator, dialogue, voice and prose style. Every idea is put straight into practice through exercises designed for writers at every stage, from first pages to finished drafts.
Some of the most memorable work happens away from the desk: writing in the streets of a hill town, giving voice to an Etruscan object in the museum, or reaching into your own past with a simple writing exercise. The evenings offer a chance to share what the day has brought to the page, with a glass of local wine in hand, and fellow writers to listen.
One-to-one time
Alongside the group sessions, each writer has the opportunity to discuss their work in a private conversation with Aga during the week. Whether it’s a novel in progress, a memoir taking shape or an idea not yet on the page, it’s a chance to talk through the project you’re carrying and leave with clear, honest guidance on where to take it next.
Aga offers WhatsApp or Facetime follow-up 1-2-1 tutorials which are an hour long and include discussion of up to 3000 words of text you can send her in advance. The discounted price for the retreat clients is £80 per session or £260 for a block of four sessions.
If you haven't been on retreat with us yet, but would like to find out more about having 1-2-1's with Aga or about the writing component of this retreat, you can email Aga for more information.
