10th Myth: “I’d rather have the operation”

Fact: An operation is sometimes unavoidable, but whilst an operation might fix the symptoms it won’t fix any underlying muscle weakness. In such cases the symptoms could reappear after a few years and another operation be needed.

Whatever your thoughts about having an operation, it is still worth trying pelvic floor exercises. These can help you in preparation for the operation; it will be easier for your surgeon to work on fitter tissues. Also, the recovery process is faster and hopefully further operations can be avoided. Of course, you should discuss all this carefully with your doctor and get their go ahead before you undertake any course of exercises, either before or after an operation.
