Therapeutic Approaches

Rosemary works integratively across several evidence-based psychological models:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – A form of therapy focusing on your thoughts, feelings and behaviours and how these connect together. You may notice how your thinking, mental images or memories can keep certain behaviours going or can impact on your mood. Rosemary may experiment with cognitive or behavioural strategies to try to modify some of these.

Family/Systemic Model  – Rosemary will draw on systems theory to broaden the focus of the treatment from you as an individual to the family and social context. Together, you will look at how relationships, patterns of interaction and communications shape your experiences. You will examine how problems have arisen in an interpersonal context and may have been impacted by wider frameworks such as expectations of culture or gender.

Psychodynamic Model – With Rosemary, you will use your therapeutic relationship to understand your symptoms and how they relate to your early history, development and current relationships.  Both unconscious communications as well as what is spoken in the therapy room can be used to inform the work.

Narrative Therapy – Rosemary will use curiosity in examining and understanding the stories and narratives that make up your life, what stories are dominant and perhaps disempowering, what stories are less well-developed and could be explored to develop an alternative narrative with richer resources and possibilities.

Motivational Interviewing – A style of counselling which is highly effective in working through the change process in addictions or other dysfunctional or destructive behaviours. Using empathy, reflective listening and collaboration, you both will nonjudgementally explore your values, beliefs and the ambivalence that may be preventing you from making positive changes.
